What I Have Learned in My Introduction to Air Cargo Industry Course

By Sudaysi Jamal Abdulkadir

Taking the Introduction to Air Cargo Industry course of my 4th semester in my BBA Logistics and Supply Chain Management program that has been a very informative and eye-opening experience for me. I’m Sudaysi Jamal Abdulkadir, and through this course, I have learned many important things about how the air cargo industry works, who the key players are, and how the system supports global trade. Here’s a summary of what I have learned throughout this course:

1. The History of Air Cargo and Multimodal Transport

I started by learning about the history of air cargo and mail—how it all began with air mail and grew into a global network of air freight, express deliveries, and overnight services. It was interesting to see how these systems have evolved to meet the needs of fast and efficient deliveries.

I also learned about multimodal transport, where cargo is transported using more than one mode such as rail, road, sea, and air. This gave me a clear understanding of how different transport modes work together to ensure smooth movement of goods around the world.

2. Key Organizations Supporting Air Cargo

I learned about some of the most important global organizations that support and regulate the air cargo industry:

  • IATA (International Air Transport Association) – helps standardize airline and cargo operations.

  • ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) – responsible for setting international aviation rules.

  • FIATA (International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations) – represents global freight forwarders.

  • TIACA (The International Air Cargo Association) – works to improve and promote the air cargo industry.

These organizations play a big role in keeping the industry safe, connected, and efficient.

3. Air Cargo Business Models

This was one of my favorite topics. I learned about different business models used in air cargo:

  • Freighters that only carry cargo,

  • Charters used for urgent or special shipments,

  • Integrators like FedEx and DHL who manage both transport and delivery,

  • Combination carriers that carry both passengers and cargo,

  • Courier and e-commerce services, which are growing fast with online shopping.

I also understood how the choice of a business model depends on factors like geography, volume of goods, and market needs.

4. Key Stakeholders and Terminologies

In this part, I learned about the many stakeholders involved in the air cargo industry:

  • Airlines, both direct and through agents like GSA (General Sales Agent) and GSSA (General Sales & Service Agent),

  • Shippers, freight forwarders, custom brokers, consolidators, and trucking companies.

Each one plays a specific role in the movement of cargo. I also became familiar with important industry terms and abbreviations, which helped me better understand how professionals communicate in this field.

5. Training and Development in the Air Cargo Industry

Finally, I learned about the importance of training in the aviation and air cargo sectors. With constant changes in technology, safety regulations, and customer expectations, continuous learning is essential. I explored different areas of training, such as cargo handling, documentation, safety, and customer service. Organizations like IATA and ICAO also provide valuable training programs for people working in this field.

Conclusion

This course has really helped me gain a strong foundation in the air cargo industry. As Sudaysi Jamal Abdulkadir, I feel more confident in understanding how air cargo works and how it connects the world through trade and logistics. I now understand the systems, the people, and the processes involved, and I believe this knowledge will support me well in my future career in logistics and supply chain management.
